Although much accommodation in St Vincent’s and the Grenadines tends to be on the luxurious side, there are better value options available.
A place to stay could be a simple cottage next to a beach, a colonial hotel in the mountains or even a luxurious private island. All hotels are small, as befits the relaxed and unspoilt feel of these beautiful tropical islands.
The Cobblestone Inn in the capital, Kingstown, has been painstakingly restored by local craftsmen. Dating back to 1814, it was originally a sugar warehouse. It is located in a waterfront location, and has a rooftop bar.
The town provides much of St Vincent and the Grenadines culture, and is a convenient place to base a holiday in the country, and it is a lively and historical town. The island has many black beaches, the result of volcanic activity over the years.
A new resort on the Island of St Vincent itself, Buccament Bay, will open in April 2011, expanding provision for visitors considerably. A 45 minute drive from the airport, it is located on the Western coast, giving guests access to the quieter waters of the Caribbean Sea, rather than the choppier Atlantic Ocean on the Eastern coast. When completed the resort will have a wide range of accommodation, from studios to plantation houses with four bedrooms and their own grounds.
The Grenadines also offer plenty of places to stay, and the accommodation tends to be quieter and more peaceful. The Bequia Beach Hotel on the island of Bequia has only recently been built, and is situated by the gorgeous Friendship Beach. It has an infinity pool and is surrounded by tropical gardens.
Private islands are the ultimate in luxury and privacy. Palm Island for example, prides itself on providing a relaxing environment, and has just 43 guest rooms, and a whole range of different activities. The completely unspoilt Petit St Vincent, another tropical paradise, lies 40 miles south of St Vincent, and is perhaps the most tranquil island. It has only 22 guest cottages, with no televisions, or telephones. Complete privacy is guaranteed.
Young Island is located much closer to the bustle of the Kingstown, lying just off the coast from the town. A cocktail bar in the sea, that guests have to swim to, serves drinks in coconut shells. Wherever you stay in St Vincent and the Grenadines, you are sure to have a holiday to remember.
