There is no shortage of things to do in the tropical paradise of St Vincent and the Grenadines. Just being here, and getting used to the laid-back way of life, is a relaxing, fabulous holiday. The beaches are glorious, with white sand, turquoise sea, and lush vegetation. They are also quiet, so a beach holiday is the obvious choice. However, the country offers much more than gorgeous beaches.
The islands are renowned for their sailing, and you can find something to suit all levels, from a beginners training course to hiring a boat and sailing yourself around at your own pace.
Many companies offer skippered charters, where you can relax and enjoy your trip. Many of the islands are uninhabited so you can drop anchor wherever you like and enjoy your freedom and privacy.
There are plenty of other water sports too, including diving and snorkelling. These activities are easily available in resorts scattered all over the islands.
Another active pastime is walking. The interior of St Vincent offers some breathtaking treks. Climbing to the top of La Soufrière, the active volcano, gives awe-inspiring views. Treks are usually on established paths, and many visit the spectacular waterfalls of the island, including the Falls of Baleine. One walk takes you to the Owia Salt Pond, used for therapeutic bathing. Walking is not just available in the capital, but the Grenadines also offer opportunities for exploring. On Union Island for example, there are coastal hikes with spectacular views.
Lovers of wildlife are in for a treat. St Vincent has both the Vermont and Cumberland nature trails. Visitors should be able to see the rare St Vincent parrot, hummingbirds and giant turtles. Trips can also be arranged offshore for whale and dolphin watching. The Botanical Gardens in St Vincent are one of the oldest in the world. It contains a direct descendent of the breadfruit that Captain Bligh brought here after the mutiny on the Bounty.
For a dose of St Vincent and Grenadines culture visit the national museum, or make a journey to Layou Petroglyph Park. Here you can book a guided tour to see ancient stone carvings that are unique to St Vincent.
Other activities offered throughout the islands include horse riding, tennis, spa treatments, shopping, golf, croquet and cycling. So, boredom is never an issue on these idyllic islands.
